Know the 5 different types of Asthma

1. Kshudra Swasa

Over exertion and overeating cause heavy breathing. This will subside by itself (without any treatment) with rest and is not troublesome.

2. Tamaka Swasa

This condition is identified as bronchial asthma in modern parlance. In this condition, the air or vata which gets aggravated begins to move in the upward direction in the channels of respiration, and causes breathlessness, pain in the head and neck, chest and flanks, cough accompanied by cracking sound, thirst and acute asthmatic attack.

Some people lose consciousness. Some find momentary comfort after expectorations while some are unable to breath while lying and find comfort in sitting. Other conditions include fore head sweating, great distress, dryness in the mouth, desire for hot comfort, accompanied by tremors.

This condition worsens with drinking cold water, or by climatic conditions like cloudy sky, cold breeze and also substances which increase phlegm (sputum).

There are two major forms of bronchial asthma – extrinsic asthma and intrinsic asthma. The former is the form in which the offending substances – dust, pollen and food – enter the body from the outside world, while the later originates from the body, caused by sources like chronic sinusitis.

It is possible for the doctor to differentiate these two types clearly in most instances, but one must not infer that these varieties are mutually exclusive. It is not uncommon to see individuals who exhibit combination of these in varying degrees, or start with one type and followed by another. The separation is by no means an academic one, for the treatment and outlook of these two types vary considerably.

3. Chinna Swasa

The patients breathe with interruption, have cutting pain in the vital organs accompanied by sweating, fainting, flatulence, burning sensation and obstruction in urinary bladder. They have downward gazes. Their eyes are unsteady and sometimes deluded. In some occasions, on of the eyes turns red.

The patient will also experience dryness in mouth or talk irrelevantly and sometimes lose consciousness. This condition is identified as Cheyenne – stroke respiration and it normally appears at the terminal stage of many diseases.

4. Maha Swasa

Patients of this type of asthma breathe heavily and feel distressed. Their respiration is accompanied by high sound. Their eyes’ focus become unsteady, their chest constricted. Other conditions include obstruction of urine and faeces, broken voice, severe pain in the ear, temples and head. This condition also appears at the terminal stage of many diseases.

5. Urdwa Swasa

The patients have prolonged upward breathing, but face the inability of bringing it downwards. They roll their eyeballs and show terrified looks, as well as having severe pain as though the vital organs are being cut.
