Pulau Kapas or literally translated as ‘Cotton Island’ is another great holiday island in Malaysia.

Strategically located about 15 kilometres from the south of Kuala Terengganu, the island can be easily accessed by speedboat merely by about 30 minutes.

On the eastern side of the island is a great reef called Berakit. The reef is supported by two large boulders with coral growth. You can find a variety of reef fishes like damsels, wrasses, blennies and gobies or more exotic bamboo sharks.

On the north of the island, there is a Japanese Landing Craft Wreck lying upright at a depth of 25 metres. It is a favourite site for adventurous divers who look for something unique and exiting escape. You can descend from the anchor line and swim slowly to enjoy the remains of the wrecked craft.

A bit further north, you can find another smaller island Pulau Gemia. This site is a popular site for divers who like to wander within a depth of 16 metres. There are many varieties of hard corals carpeting the escape. There are schools of  chromis, damsels, wrasses and parrotfish swimming and playing around the hard corals.

Best Time To Go

If you would prefer to have a time of tranquility and peace alone on this island, the best time to go is during the weekdays when most of the locals are working. Due to the monsoon season, most resorts will be closed from November to February. Hence, the best time to go will be during the months of June, July, August and September.

There are 9 resorts at the main Kapas Island:

Turtle Valley Chalet
The Light House
Duta Puri Island Resort
Kapas Island Resort
Kapas Beach Chalet
Makcik Gemok Beach Resort
Qimy Chalet
Kapas Garden Resort
Harmony Camp Site

The one and only resort at Gemia Island is Gem Island Resort & Spa.
